About Al-Khat

Why Al-Khat: editorial on a region in flames Why Al-Khat: editorial on a region in flames

Al-Khat is founded on the conviction that our region, this Arab-Islamic space, is living through a critical historical conjuncture that demands rigorous analysis. We seek to go beyond simply taking a position, toward a deeper engagement with the ongoing processes of liberation from hegemony, occupation, and fragmentation, in ways that speak to the present moment.

(1) We provide an open space for voices that reject colonial hegemony in all its forms, regardless of their particular ideological affiliations. We believe that what unites those who reject domination runs deeper than what divides them.

(2) We understand Palestine and its liberation from occupation as a political concept in its own right. Its centrality does not derive from its place in the hierarchy of current events, but from the fact that it encompasses an analytical and historical framework, as well as the tools of liberation, within itself. In this sense, Palestine is both an end and a means, intellectually and politically.

(3) We see sectarian, religious, and territorial divisions as historical and contemporary tools for perpetuating and entrenching Western hegemony. We seek to move beyond these divisions by treating the region as a unified analytical space.

(4) Al-Khat does not produce propaganda or talking points to mobilize the masses, nor does it serve any political or military actor. We produce rigorous analysis grounded in methodological discipline and intellectual depth.

(5) We do not claim neutrality. We are explicit in our opposition to occupation, authoritarianism, and exploitation, and in our commitment to freedom and justice. At the same time, we seek to think through these values outside the Western frameworks, institutions, political reference points, and tools through which hegemony is reproduced in the region
